Peat & Moss

Sphagnum moss was packed into battlefield wounds in both World Wars; its antimicrobial properties made it one of the most effective natural dressings ever used. Peat has been cut and burned for fuel on these moors for centuries; it was the heating, the cooking, the warmth through winter. The cut marks are still visible across the Dark Peak today.

Now the same bogs are understood to be among the most significant carbon stores in the British landscape, and their restoration is considered critical in the fight against climate change.

Heather has marked this landscape since before it was farmed; white heather, rare enough to find by chance, was considered lucky across the British Isles - a sprig carried for protection, pressed into letters, tucked into wedding bouquets.

This candle was made with all of that in mind.

Burn 2–3 hours at a time. Trim the wick to 5mm. 400g. 55 hrs.
